Figma UI / Component Library
B2B / Figma Design System

The Brief:
Really this is a combination of two systems for two different clients, but the problem and solutions were both the same. Tech start-ups all have a similar problem to solve; working fast and building consistent brand equity. The idea here was to design a UI component library and system that would allow for quick drag + drop components to auto-build pages faster and with consistent CSS for quicker development + deployment.

What's to solve
In a nutshell, Brand Consistency, stream-lined workflows, and Implementing a consistent grid system to defined styles that could be centralized and easily updated. An unwieldy number of icons and containers, with hundreds of variations of color, shape, and styles was a great challenge to overcome while still making it simple and easy to customize. Also to solve was to design a system simple and with a low enough hurdle to onboard designers not at proficient or experienced in Figma.

Challenges
I think trying to implement any process change (especially Design Systems) the greatest challenge is the pushback from those who are meant to use it and who would benefit most from it. Often the buy-in and explaining of the benefits and advantages is half the work. In these two client cases, there was already such a scattered collection of unordered assets and various versions of UI + visual brand identities to rein in. The challenge really began in a site-wide UI asset audit, and gathering of all components and building them from scratch using a grid system and auto-layout so that the interfaces could be easily snapped together by anyone without having to worry so much about set styles and reinventing the wheel each time with each new page or pdf design.

The Outcome
A Social Media Asset Builder: Besides a quick and easy to use resource for drag and drop design of pages, social media assets and pdfs, a custom design system can streamline design processes, keep Brand and UI elements consolidated and centralized, as well as lowering the bar for design expertise, making it easier for anyone to build pages and assets. Although these are still a work in progress, the ability to track and consolidate the UI and design assets has helped to rein in a design process that was time intensive, greatly unorganized, and with inconsistent builds.
